CANELA

Serra Gaúcha has been inhabited since time immemorial by the Caingang Indians. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, these were violently displaced by the action of indigenous killers, the so-called "bugreiros". These were hired by the Brazilian imperial government to open space for the installation of European immigrants in the region, aiming at a "whitening" of the Brazilian population, which at the time was predominantly black or mestizo. At the same time, the region was cleared by descendants of Azoreans, the so-called "tropeiros", who used the region for the rest of the cattle.

One of the most important tourist destinations in Rio Grande do Sul, the city of Canela had its first urban nucleus formed in 1903, when Colonel João Ferreira Corrêa da Silva settled there. It was under his organization that the road to Taquara was built, from whose territory Canela was a part, and the main services were instituted. The main square of Canela was named in honor of this pioneer. The healthy climate and the natural beauties have sustained the demand of the city as a summer resort since the 1930s and especially from the 1940s.

It was also at this time that the emancipationist movement led by Pedro Sander, Nagibe da Rosa, Danton Corrêa da Silva, Attilio Zugno and Pedro Oscar Selbach emerged. On December 28, 1944, State Law 717 created the municipality, which was installed four days later on January 1, 1945. The railroad and the Canastra and Bugres mills collaborated to consolidate the importance of Canela.
